Hello Releasers of Krakens,
Three shows I highly recommend. Just binged the first two seasons of the Righteous Gemstones and it is prime Danny McBride, but with plot. It’s great. I’m in the middle of the new season of Top Boy which in my opinion was one of the top shows of the pandemic and the new season is just as good as the last. And Atlanta season 3 debuts today. Maybe the best show of the past decade. So if you’ve never watched, binge the hell out of it and catch up!
Also just a friendly reminder to check in on your friends more. Nothing really precipitating this, just go text a friend you haven’t talked to in a while today just to say hi. It will make them happy.
Ok time for the usual linkies. Enjoy.
All Aboard The Wild Ride That Is Francis Bourgeois
Just Give Me A Synopsis:
I rarely put profiles in this section but I thought this one was pretty interesting and heartwarming. You may have seen this guy, Francis Bourgeois, on the internet before. He's the guy who goes bonkers for trains and looks goofy as hell with his fisheye go pro. He's become quite popular and this piece dives into his backstory and why people love him so much.
And A Quote From The Article Please:
Everyone in between seems thoroughly on board, too. (There are 1.4million acolytes on Instagram; 2.2m on TikTok.). Francis is some sort of cosmic palette cleanser — the influencer we need but don’t deserve. Most of what we do on social media is secondhand living, and almost all of it makes us feel lousy. Even the people that propose to help us, in fact — lifestyle advisors, fitness experts, ‘manifesting’ gurus — leave an odd taste in the mouth, like artificial sweetener. (At base, you suspect they’re helping us mainly to help themselves, and would scarcely bother if no-one was watching.)
And Tell Me Why I should Care:
I thought this was an important piece to share because it shines a light on a still hopeful part of the internet. This person goes online to share his pure unbridled joy at doing a thing he loves: looking at trains. And yeah it’s weird and lame but unlike many other social media accounts, he didn't do it to go viral or hack the system, he simply shared a niche, nerdy thing that made him happy and the internet felt his joy with every drop of their wracked, wretched soul. On the internet we're like Moses in the desert, stumbling around for 40 years, drinking our own piss and just looking for something genuine, and it is so hard to find, so when it comes along it is worth paying attention to.
We Desperately Need To Disrupt Our Approach To Retirement
Just Give Me A Synopsis:
Crazy stat from this article is that scientists predict that nearly half of babies born in “rich countries” today will live to be 100. Think of how popping the retirement homes will be. Think of all the new technology that won't be understood and all the elders who will shout "back in my day you couldn't smell a person over FaceTime and I liked it better that way!" Think of all the money these people won't have because there is no way to support them all.
And A Quote From The Article Please:
Our different ways of working, living, and spending has made the one-size-fits-all retirement plans of the past, where money is saved up to be spent in the later years of life, neither feasible nor practical. Many people will want to spend that money during one of the aforementioned transitions perhaps, or for other reasons that today may be seen as a career “interruption” but will someday be considered part of the regular ebb and flow of a long, productive life.
And Tell Me Why I should Care:
Well it is kind of starting to happen in the US already with Social Security not really paying out how it should. It's going to happen all over the world as everyone ages but young people don't come through in the same numbers because people stopped having as many kids because we realized that maybe having 8 kids might not be the best idea since we don't need them to work the farms anymore because we have robots now. Anyway, be kind to people because governments sure aren't.
War Strands Ukrainian And Russian Tourists Together In Egyptian Resorts
Just Give Me A Synopsis:
A story from the beaches of the Red Sea that paints a juxtaposition of many things. What happens when war breaks out between the two countries that are responsible for the majority of a resort's visitors.
And A Quote From The Article Please:
In normal times, Egypt’s beaches offer Russians and Ukrainians an all-inclusive escape from wintry climes just a few hours’ flight from Yekaterinburg, Russia, or from Kharkiv, Ukraine. Package tour operators would send several million of them to Sharm and Hurghada every year.
And Tell Me Why I should Care:
I always find cultural exchanges and why certain groups of people go to or wind up in certain places interesting. I had no idea Egypt was such a hotspot for Russians and Ukrainians. Obviously it’s also heartbreaking and terrifying. Aside from that though it is a very interesting application of a lot of hypotheticals. Worth the read.
